The Temple of Mastabas, with the characteristic 9-dome architecture, is an authentic monument of Rethymnon and has been conceded to GNHM following a decision of the Ministry of Culture. Upon completion of restoration and of the relevant museological study, it will operate as a Museum of Palaeontology, being annex of Goulandris National History museum in Crete.

The restored 17th- century Temple of Mastabas(aka veli Pasha Mosque)is the home of this new museum in Rethymnon.Under the wings of the Goulandris Natural History Museum this authentic 9-dome monument has been restored and the surrounding area have been turned into a botanic garden with endemic Cretan plants,trees and bushes.The paleontological collection of the Municipality of Rethymnon which consists of findings from excavations from all over the prefecture by German scientist Siegfried Kuss(University of Freiburg) will form the basis of the exhibition.The Goulandris foundation has been looking after this collection in collaboration with the University of Athens(Historical Geology and Palaeontology Faculty). Visitors will be able to see representations of dwarf Cretan elephants,dwarf hippopotamuses and polymorphous deer. Information about these animals the first inhabitants of Crete will also be made available.The museum will also provide extensive research facilities for the academic community

Αξιοσημείωτα απολιθώματα και άλλες ανακαλύψεις της προϊστορικής Κρήτης με εξαιρετική συζήτηση και εξηγήσεις μερικών από αυτές. Εάν γνωρίζετε την "Οδύσσεια" του Ομήρου, θα εκτιμήσετε ιδιαίτερα μερικές από τις υποθέσεις που προσφέρονται. Ήταν μια μακρά βόλτα από την τουριστική περιοχή του Ρεθύμνου αλλά είμαι πολύ ευτυχής που δεν χάσαμε αυτό το μουσείο. Remarkable fossils and other discoveries of prehistoric Crete with excellent discussion and explanations of some of them. If you know Homer's "Odyssey", you will especially appreciate some of the cases on offer. It was a long walk from the tourist area of Rethymnon but I am very happy that we did not miss this museum.
