The wetland at the mouth of the Lluta River is a protected natural area located on the northern coastal coast of the Arica and Parinacota region, Chile, in the final part of the Lluta River estuary, in the Atacama Desert, comprising the sector known as Las Machas beach.1 The area is ten kilometers from the center of the city of Arica and seven kilometers (in a straight line) from the landmark 1 on the border with Peru, in the vicinity of the Chacalluta border complex and the Chacalluta International Airport. La desembocadura del Río Lluta configura el principal humedal costero del norte de Chile que brinda refugio, descanso y alimentación para diversas especies de aves playeras que migran a lo largo de la costa Pacífico desde el hemisferio norte bordeando el Pacífico. En el Humedal habitan unas 130 especies de aves, lo que representa el 30% de todas las especies de aves descritas para Chile. Dentro de este grupo se ha registrado también el 40% de las aves migratorias (regulares y accidentales) que pasan por nuestro país.
