Piazza Santissima Annunziata is just 3 minutes by walk from home. There is the beautiful Spedale degli Innocenti of Brunelleschi.

The Ospedale degli Innocenti is a historical building in Florence. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, who received the commission in 1419, it was originally a children's orphanage.

From Piazza San Marco you will be in Piazza della Santissima Annunziata in just a minute: the long lodge you see in the square is the Spedale degli Innocenti, designed by Brunelleschi. It is the first orphanage in Europe: since 1445 rejected babies were abandoned here and still today the building houses facilities that take care of children without families. At the end of the lodge on the right side you can find the museum entrance. In the museum you can discover the history of the place and the stories of the children who have passed through the orphanage. First of all Agata Smeralda, the first newborn to be rescued on the 5th of February 1445. In the middle of the square you can see a bronze monument that Florentines often associated to a legend: the monument, dedicated to Ferdinando I De Medici, started by Giambologna and completed by his pupil Pietro Tacca, is famous especially for the bees that you can see on the side of the pedestal, facing the church. The queen bee symbolises the grand duke, while the swarm of industrious bees are the Florentines who are devoted to him. Legend says that counting all the bees without touching them is practically impossible and only those who succeed will be kissed by luck forever! And you? Are you going to try your luck?
