The painstakingly preserved former home of Frederic Edwin Church is now a museum hung with his paintings and those of his contemporaries from the Hudson River School, the romantic 19th-century movement. The exterior is thematically Middle Eastern, and the mixed motifs of the rooms inside reflect Church’s extensive world travels. Tours are offered at specific times, but you can also tour the expansive hilltop grounds yourself—check out the mobile self-guided tour you can download online.

Amazing house once owned by Frederic Church. Gardens, trails, view of Hudson River. Picnic and stroll. Not sure if house tours are open because of Covid.

19th century home, studio and designed landscape of Hudson River School artist Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), his wife Isabel and their four children. The 250 acre historic estate features an elaborately stenciled, Persian-inspired mansion filled with original sketches, studies and paintings by one of the mid-19th century's most famous artists. A diverse decorative arts collection includes objects from around the world. Five miles of carriage drives, many of which are now pedestrian-use only, traverse a property developed in much the way Church created his canvasses, with strategically revealed vistas of one of the most strikingly beautiful places in the Hudson Valley.
