Tucked away on Governors Island is a charming but deserted WWII-era movie theater left over from when the island was a military base. I used to wander in here as a kid on summer days. The theater has a cute little box office in front, and in its heyday you could see a double feature for $2. It’s not operational, but you can go in at your own risk. Free ferries leave from South Street in Manhattan and from Brooklyn Bridge Park every 30 to 60 minutes.
Bar none, this is my favorite place in NY. You have to take a ferry to get there, but it's like a bike and walk only version of NYC. You get all the views, there are great activities (on weekends), and it offers stunning NYC views!
free ferry ride, lovely views of bklyn, and bridges, arts, entertainment, biking, hiking close to home
Often overlooked by tourists and New Yorkers, Governors Island rest comfortably within New York’s inner harbor. The Island offers great green space, historical sight seeing and panoramic views of Brooklyn, downtown Manhattan and East River.
Fun ferry ride to a fantastic island for biking and exploring nature. Wonderful playground and slides for kids.

“Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85-acre (34 ha) park on the Brooklyn side of the East River in New York City. Designed by landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, the park is located on a 1.3-mile (2.1 km) former industrial waterfront from Atlantic Avenue in the south, under the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and past the Brooklyn Bridge, to Jay Street north of the Manhattan Bridge. The site includes Brooklyn Piers 1–6, the historic Fulton Ferry Landing, and the preexisting Empire–Fulton Ferry and Main Street Parks. The park also includes Empire Stores and the Tobacco Warehouse, two Civil War-era structures. The park is part of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, a series of parks and bike paths around Brooklyn.”

“I grew on Roosevelt Island, so I encourage all visitors to take the trip. It is a hidden oasis of the city, and the Tram offers stunning views. When you are there, you can visit the beautiful Four Freedoms Park on the southern end, or the quaint Lighthouse Park at the northern tip. ”
