Balos is a fantastic location on the northwestern side of Crete, in the region of Chania. This amazing place is like the Caribbean side of Crete. With exotic waters, soft white sand and a huge island with a Venetian Castle on top, the beach of Balos amaze all visitors at first sight.

The lagoon of Balos has white sand and exotic white, vivid blue and turquoise waters. The sea is very shallow and warm, ideal for young children. In many places the sand has a lovely pinkish color, because of millions of crushed shells. Beyond the rocks at the boundaries of the lagoon, the water is deeper and colder, ideal for a snorkeling. The lagoon and the wider area, with rare species of flora and fauna, are protected under the Natura 2000 program. Eleonora falcons, shags and cormorants nest in the caves of the area. Moreover, the area is a shelter for the protected monk seal and the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). Despite the protection, some canteens and umbrellas have appeared on the beach in recent years. You can buy water from there and from the bars of the ferries.

The Balos Beach, which is situated in the north-west side of the island, is one of the most beautiful landscapes, our nature has ever created! With its crystal clear turquoise waters, the fine white sand and the lagoon of the size of about 5 football fields (the depth of the lagoon varies between 20-50cm), it is a place to spend a fantastic day (or 2) with friends and family! The access to the beach though is not an easy task. You can drive till about 1km away from the beach, park and then hike down the cliff, facing a breathtaking panorama of Balos beach and lagoon and Gramvousa island, however for the last 10 kms an SUV would be desired. Alternatively you can take the ship from Kissamos and off you jump in the water of Balos Beach in about an hour.

Balos Lagoon is an exotic beach! You can go there for a daily cruise from Kissamos or drive and walk. Also, you can arrange a private cruise from Chania port. Balos is located approximately 50km northwest of Chania. It has exotic white, turquise and vivid blue waters!
