Plastering the exterior of Porto's 18th-century Carmo church is a blaze of blue and white azulejos (tiles), and the striking façade is one of the most instantly recognized in the city.
The beautiful Igreja do Carmo, another must-see when visiting Porto, built between 1756 and 1768. Something rare that you will notice is the fact that the Igreja do Carmo is located next to another church, the Igreja dos Carmelitas, built between 1616 and 1628. Located in downtown Porto, the Carmo and Carmelitas churches look like the biggest church in the city. In fact, they are two churches separated by one of the world’s narrowest houses. This house was built to make all contact between the nuns and the monks impossible. If you look closely, you’ll find Carmo Church (on the right) and Carmelitas Church (on the left).
