Agios Nikolaos, capital of the Prefecture of Lasithi,is one of the most highly developed tourist towns in Greece.Aghios Nikolaos, with over forty years of experience in the tourism industry is an international and cosmopolitan resort that welcomes thousands of visitors annually. It is a medium-size town with a small-town feel, one that has lots to offer. You can walk and enjoy walking here, you have several distinct waterfronts -you can get to know it quickly and feel familiar with the place like an old friend. The town has three faces to the sea:The Lake and port, Kitroplatia beach and the Marina. The landmark of the city is definitely the lake, known as "Voulismeni" that is located in the center of the city,a folklore-inspiringly deep body of water which is connected to the sea by a narrow inlet. Its shape is circular with a diameter of 137m.In 1853 however,a British admiral had soundings taken and found that it did have a bottom, albeit at a depth of 200 feet. This fact did little to quell the belief that it was bottomless, this is why in 1976 the highly-respected undersea explorer,Jacques Cousteau, became something of a local villain. That year the Frenchman and his team of divers came to Crete in search of evidence of the remains of lost civilizations.Taking time out from their underwater searches for Minoan artifacts,he sent a diver into Lake Voulismeni and he confirmed once and for all that it was not bottomless. It is surrounded and overlooked by cafes and restaurants - a busy gathering place for local residents and visitors alike. According to the mythology, the goddess Athena used to take her bath in this lake. The depth of the lake is 64 m and was connected to the sea only recently, with a canal opened at 1870.A walk around the shops of Aghios Nikolaos is an enjoyable experience. In the many stores the visitor can find a wide selection of traditional Cretan artwork, copies of pieces from different archaeological museums, jewelry, and embroidery. There are also many examples of woven goods and Byzantine icons. There are bustling cafeterias, charming coffeehouses and taverns serving traditional Cretan “mesedes” or tidbits of local food. You can find innumerable opportunities for night-time entertainment at a variety of bars and discos.
