I would highly recommend to my guests to walk the Via Maqueda, historic street of Palermo. After an interesting and pleasant walk of just a few meters, you will see on the left the enchanting church of Sant'Maria dell'Ammiraglio, known as Martorana, located in the historic center of Palermo, as well as the Byzantine and Norman building of the Middle Ages. Still remaining on Via Maqueda, you can admire Piazza Pretoria, also known as Piazza della vergogna, located on the edge of the Kalsa district, near the corner of the Cassaro with Via Maqueda. Continuing on the course you will see the "Quattro Canti", exact center of the city of Palermo, as well as ancient street of Phoenician origin. At the four corners there are splendid monumental decorations dating back to the first half of the 600s, depicting on several levels. The ancient via Vittorio Emanuele or del Cassaro connects the acropolis and the Palazzo dei Normanni or Reale to the sea about half of their length. Turning to the left of the "Quattro Canti" you will enter right on the aforementioned Corso Vittorio Emanuele, where you will notice charming and folkloric shops (made in Sicily), restaurants, bistros, bakery shops, artisan ice-cream parlors offering typical regional recipes. Continuing to walk on the main street it is possible to admire the Cathedral, which today is part of the World Heritage Site (Unesco), within the Palermo Arab-Norman serial site. Adjacent to the Cathedral, one can see Porta Nuova. For centuries it has been the most important access to Palermo by land. Beyond Porta Nuova you will enter Piazza Indipendenza. Turning immediately to the left, you will see Palazzo dei Normanni, known as Palazzo Reale, currently the headquarters of the Regional Assembly. The Palace is the oldest royal residence in Europe, home of the sovereigns of the Kingdom of Sicily. Next to the Palazzo dei Normanni is the Palatine Chapel, which is a Basilica with three naves, located within the architectural complex of the Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo. Going back along Corso Vittorio Emanuele in the direction of the "Quattro Canti" and once having crossed the intersection, you can admire a glimpse of the sea. Remaining on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, you can head inside the "Vucciuria", a well-known historical market that extends between Via Roma, the Cala, the Cassaro along the Via Cassari. The "Vucciuria" is a market where fish, meat and vegetables are sold. Otherwise there are many pubs, bistrots, etc., meeting places for young people, where you can sip a drink or an aperitif with friends. This market in Palermo means "confusion", the confusion, the din of overlapping voices and the cries of the vendors, is one of the distinctive and peculiar elements that characterize this local market. Once in "Porta Felicia", which is the entrance to the sea side of the Cassaro, one of the main axes of the city. Across the door you will see the Foro Italico or Marina promenade which is a large green area that forms one of Palermo's waterfronts. It extends from the Cala to Villa Giulia in the Kalsa district. The Cala located next to the Foro Italico is a sea area, between Via Francesco Crispi and the Foro Italico, and corresponds to the oldest port of the city of Palermo and is currently accessed through the entrance to the Port of Palermo .
