Walk a few minutes north on Coast Boulevard to The Cave Store. Inside this souvenir shop awaits the entrance to the only sea cave accessible by land, Sunny Jim sea cave. It’s a sometimes-slippery walk down the staircase into the cave, so be mindful of small children. Once inside, it’s fun to hear the echo of the ocean and occasional sea lion. A small admission fee is required. Along the way to The Cave Store, you’ll pass Clam’s Cave, another of La Jolla’s seven sea caves, which is the only sea cave in California that you can see from land. There is no need to plan a ton of time for this side adventure, maybe 30 minutes, including the walk from La Jolla Cove and it’s not necessary if you are short on time.

The only sea cave in California that is accessible by land through an over 100-year old tunnel.

26 mile drive away, The Sunny Jim Cave got its name from ‘Wizard of Oz‘ author Frank Baum, who remarked the cave’s silhouette had a striking resemblance to Sunny Jim, the British Force wheat cereal’s mascot in the 1920’s. As the legend goes, the Sunny Jim Cave also has a more sinister side, being used to funnel whiskey to San Diego during the Prohibition era. It is also said to have been used to smuggle immigrants into the U.S. Today it is open to the public to tour!

If you’re pouring over a map of San Diego and wondering where to go, consider Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave. Formerly a smuggler’s tunnel, it’s become one of the best known attractions in the city for folks who like cool historical locations. Your journey starts in a small, wood-shingled beach shop. There are hundreds like it in California, but this one has a secret exit that will lead you down sandstone cliffs and into a sea cave. The trip will be dark, wet, humid and slippery. There are stairs and rails, but they’re built directly into the caverns, and the tides wash over them quite often. The danger is part of the appeal, however. It truly looks and feels like the bootlegger’s passage that it used to be. If you want to make some fun, lasting memories while you’re in San Diego, grab your flashlight and venture into Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave. Address: 1325 Cave St, La Jolla, San Diego, CA 92037, United States
