Legong was developed in Balinese palaces in the second half of the 19th century. Legong dance is a group of classical Balinese dances which have very complex vocabulary that is bound by the accompaniment of the percussion structure which is said to be the influence of gambuh. The word Legong comes from the word "leg" which means flexible or flexible dance movements and "gong" which means gamelan. "Legong" thus implies dance moves that are bound (especially accents) by the accompanying gamelan. Gamelan used to accompany legong dance is called Gamelan Semar Pagulingan.
