Best thrift-shopping on the East End. The LVIS Bargain Box.

Every Hamptonite knows about L.V.I.S. (pronounced "Elvis") in East Hampton which stands for Ladies Village Improvement Society. This thrift shop is nestled into the back of a beautiful historic site beside the tennis courts in Herrick park in East Hampton. You can walk to it easily from the compact car park of Herrick parking lot. LVIS dates back to 1895 when "ladies who lunch" (then in long dresses) got together and beautified the village. They now not only take care of various gardens and trees in East Hampton but they offer scholarships and programs to the local students. There is clothing thrift store which in my opinion is more hit than miss as clothes can be dropped off by wealthy Hamptonites who perhaps have only worn the item once! Donations are sorted out on the racks by color so it's easy to find what you want. There is also a "Labels for Less" rack for the more designer threads. They have furniture and bric-a-brac for sale in the "Bargain Box" a separate shop ... and it's nice to browse the many books in the back too. (Children's section is nice). Every LAST SATURDAY of July, LVIS holds a festival fundraiser with a carousel, food and is fun for families.
