Fun town at the base of the mountains! Great spot to stop for lunch or dinner before or after hiking or Wallkill Valley rail trail.
It's a town that has funky, bohemian vibes and can enjoy on a student's budget. About a 25-30 min bike ride, or a healthy morning walk (like all morning), on the rail trail or drive there in 8 minutes. (Park like a local, and avoid Main street on the weekends. My goto parking spots are Church Street and Orchard intersection and walking 2 blocks to Main, or by the Clemson Bros Brewery -- which is next to rail trail and a great place to bring your bikes too). Cozy coffee shops, local galleries and boutiques, and plenty of restaurants. Galleries include: Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art (1 Hawk Drive), which sits on the State University of New York (SUNY) New Paltz campus. The museum has a permanent collection, as well as rotating exhibitions that show off local artists from the Hudson Valley, as well as burgeoning artists from around the globe. From there, make your way to the Unison Arts Center (68 Mountain Rest Road) to enjoy the outdoor sculpture walk, as well as its events calendar of cultural performances. The DM Weil Gallery (208 Bruynswick Road) is another option, with contemporary art exhibits, or there is the Mark Gruber Gallery (13 New Paltz Plaza), which specializes in Hudson Valley fine art. Also, Huguenot Street is a 10-acre National Historic Landmark District that sits on the Wallkill River. Today there are many buildings that date back to the 1600s, when New Paltz was founded by French Huguenots who were seeking safety from religious persecution. Seven preserved colonial houses, a reconstructed church, and a replica wigwam from the indigenous Esopus tribe can be found along the street.

Quaint college town, main street has lots of tasty restaurants and is cute to walk around.
If you're in the mood for somewhere hip, make your way to New Paltz, a small college town that abuts the rugged Shawangunk Ridge. From scenic hikes with spectacular views to renowned rock climbing at the 'Gunks and breathtaking lakes, New Paltz is a gateway to natural wonders. Spend a day exploring in Mohonk Preserve or Minnewaska State Park, then drop down into town for a locally-sourced meal and a fresh brew from a local brewery or cider house. If nature's not your game, no worries. New Paltz's Main Street has plenty of shops, coffee houses, restaurants, and performance venues to discover, too!

Biggest town in the area - a lively main street, events at the SUNY, apple picking at Jenkins-Luekin Orchards, historic buildings on Huguenot Street, and a gorgeous but terrifying drive down the Shawangunk Ridge from the Waterfalls House. Make time to stop and take pictures at the designated viewpoints on Route 44/55!
