At one end of Calaveras road, you can enter the Sunol regional park. Find the trail head for a wonderful hike along the shady stream or atop the sunny mountain.

This is a regional park with a lot of exposure (minimal shade) and many miles of trails to explore. If you're having trouble deciding, might I suggest checking out Little Yosemite, for starters?

Excellent hiking, especially in the winter/spring/fall (too hot in the summer!) The views are stunning and on a clear day you can see the Pacific ocean. In the spring the hills are emerald green and really dreamy. Only 25 mins drive.
